It’s Ok to Use It

Two white bowls with single handles

I’m often asked, “But what should I DO with my family heirloom?”

My response is always, “What do you want to do with it?”

At this point people are often taken aback. I think they assume I’m going to tell them to lock it away in storage and never use it again for fear of breaking or damaging it.

In some cases, that may be what might be best for the object. You have to consider the condition its in and what your goals are for it. If it is a book in poor condition, but you are hoping your great-grandchildren will get to see it. Then, yes, probably the best thing to do is stabilize it and store it, taking it out occasionally to check on the condition, but to try to manipulate it as little as possible.

Other objects don’t necessarily need to be treated so delicately. For instance, something I chose that belonged to my maternal grandmother was soup bowls. There were only two of them and they aren’t valuable. They're Anchor Hocking from the 1970s. They were her everyday dishes. So why did I want them? Arguably there is very little historical or monetary value in them.

I chose them because I have fond memories of eating from them with my grandparents. I remember eating creamy tomato soup and having grilled cheese sandwiches sitting at the bar in their kitchen while they sat at the table. I remember my grandmother serving me soup out of these bowls when I was sick.

These bowls sit at the top of my cabinet and when I’m sick my husband brings me soup in them. I love them being at the top of my cabinet. I see them every morning and think of my grandparents looking down on me - watching over me. Yes, every once in a while I get a nervous feeling that they might fall out, that someone might break them while trying to use one, but having them in the cabinet with my everyday dishes, where I can see them every day, and where I often use them when I serve soup means a lot.

It helps me keep my grandparents in my life on a daily basis and if you stop to think about it, when it comes down to it, is that not really a great way to honor their memory.

JIMI

This week I'm attending an 8 day museum management institute on Jekyll Island. Today was just the first day and although it was mainly welcome speeches and getting to know each other there was one session that was presented and I think it was a very interesting one. The session was on management and leadership. I think the thing the presenter hit on the most for me was the difference in what it means to be a manager and what it means to be a leader. It was very interesting to quickly learn the differences in the two types of work that both positions fill. He'll be continuing the discussion in a second session tomorrow, so I'll speak more on it later. Jekyll Island is beautiful and we were able to tour the historic district today. I highly encourage anyone to come out here if you ever get the chance. Georgia has laws that the island must remain 65% un-developed making it such a beautiful natural setting. Also every dollar spent on the island stays on the island and ...

Missing Tapes Update

Well, I’m still looking for the interview tapes of my grandfather and my mother-in-law. In this round I’ve learned not to trust labels. I found a commercial tape in a “homemade” cassette holder. That prompted me to go back through all my commercial tapes and look in the cases. I found some home tapes in them and got all my commercial tapes back in their cases. I found a tape that was labeled with my husband’s name, but I listened to it anyway. It was an accompaniment tape from my voice lessons. I updated the label. I found another tape that was labeled Heather’s Birthday Present. I listened to it. Turns out it was my birthday present TO my husband. I updated the label to be more precise.  So what did I uncover in this round of listening? Lip Sync contest tape from Elementary School. I still can’t believe we didn’t win with Ghostbusters. But also on that tape was my sister singing, and the B side was some square dance calling. I’m going to have to ask my parents if they recog...

Updating and Organizing

Since changing jobs I've gotten behind on posting my presentation handouts and updating my CV.  So I've spent the evening updating my CV, my Linked In profile, my website, and my slideshare account.  I'm not finished yet, but I should be in the next few days. Whew, I do not recommend getting this far behind in keeping your online information current!
